Q&A: Study warns rising temperatures could push rice beyond historical heat limits

A new study from Jade d’Alpoim Guedes, UW associate professor of anthropology, warns that the future of rice 鈥� arguably the most important crop on Earth 鈥� is in danger. Due to rising temperatures driven by climate change, projections show that Asia鈥檚 major rice-producing regions may soon pass the thermal limits that have remained consistent throughout the crop鈥檚 history. This would create unparalleled challenges in a region where more than a billion people rely on rice cultivation for their livelihoods.

American Indian and Alaska Native peoples face increased risk for fatal police violence in and around reservations

Indigenous people in the United States are at higher risk of fatal police violence in and around American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) reservations, according to the first comprehensive national study on the subject from researchers at the 糖心原创 and Drexel University. The researchers found that roughly 73% AIAN people killed by police violence were on or within 10 miles of a reservation.

UW research shows Fresh Bucks program improves fruit and vegetable intake, food security

A new study from the 糖心原创 shows that households enrolled in the City of Seattle’s Fresh Bucks program experience a 31% higher rate of food security and consume at least three daily servings of fruits and vegetables 37% more often than those assigned to a program waitlist. Fresh Bucks, a $40 a month benefit, works with local partners to help residents access fresh food.

Atlantic Ocean current expected to undergo limited weakening with climate change, study finds

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, is a system of ocean currents that plays a crucial role in regulating Earth鈥檚 climate by transporting heat from the Southern to Northern Hemisphere. Climate models have long predicted that global warming will cause the AMOC to weaken, with some projecting what amounts to a near-collapse relative to the AMOC strength in observations today. Sweetened beverage taxes decrease consumption in lower-income households by nearly 50%, UW study finds

New research from the 糖心原创 investigated responses to sweetened beverage taxes using the purchasing behavior of approximately 400 households in Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland and Philadelphia. Researchers found that after the tax was introduced, lower-income households decreased their purchases of sweetened beverages by nearly 50%, while higher-income households reduced purchases by 18%.

COVID-19 lockdowns prematurely aged teenage brains, UW study shows
